Mangroves, an integral player of the ocean ecosystem

9 June, 2023 - Members of the Pacific Ocean Alliance (POA) gathered this morning for a mangrove seedling potting at the Lami Fisheries Station.

Led by the Itaukei Women in Conservation, the mangrove seedlings will be transplanted on an identified site on November 21 during World Fisheries Day.

Representing GIZ Pacific, MACBLUE Intern Rosyln Delailovu shared the exercise was a pleasant and learning experience for her.

“I was able to learn the type of soil to be used for potting, the type of bags to use and the seedlings that are used,” she shared.

“Women involvement in mangrove decision making is important because as a young woman our role in our community usually involves us engaging in going out to the mangrove ecosystem to look for food such as fish, mud crabs, shellfish and many more”

“The activity is important because we were able to pot mangrove seedlings that will be then transferred into the mangrove habitats, and this will increase biodiversity of the marine ecosystems within the restored area”

The Pacific Ocean Alliance is a network of government, academic institutions and civil society organisations working towards securing a future for Pacific Islands based on sustainable development, management, and conservation of the Pacific Ocean.

GIZ Pacific has been a member of the network for the past few years.
