World Wetlands Day 2023

2 February, 2023 - As we commemorate World Wetlands Day, we would like to share a few insights into why Wetlands are important!

Wetlands can store up to fifty times more carbon compared to rain forests

Currently the world’s mangroves store carbon equivalent to over 21 gigatons of CO2. Destruction of mangrove ecosystems releases this carbon back into the atmosphere, exacerbating climate change.

Despite covering only 0.1 per cent of the ocean floor, these meadows are highly efficient carbon sinks, storing up to 18 per cent of the world’s oceanic carbon.

Seagrasses can also buffer ocean acidification, thus contributing to the resilience of the most vulnerable ecosystems and species, such as coral reefs, and act as the first line of defense along coasts by reducing wave energy, protecting people from the increasing risk of floods and storms.
